Just back from a 4 day trip to Marrakech with a friend

We stayed in a Riad in the heart of the Medina. Here are a few points which may be helpful to anyone planning a visit

Navigating the Medina

There are mopeds and small motorbikes constantly whizzing along all the alleyways in the souks etc. You will struggle to walk 2 abreast!

Cat Lovers, Take Note

There are stray cats and kittens EVERYWHERE! If you are a cat lover, maybe take some dried cat food for them, and leave dishes of water outside your accommodation if you can.

Currency Tips

Euros are basically interchangeable with Dirhams and you’ll be given change in both. You can pay with Euros or by card in most of the souks.

Airport Boarding Passes

You don’t have to have a paper print-out of your boarding pass when coming home. Airport staff told us they’re now fine with passes stored on your phone

Carpet Weaver Caution

If you visit the Artisanal shopping centre, do not take up the carpet weaver’s offer to sit with her and have a go. You’ll be asked for money afterward, despite the friendly invitation.

What to Wear

You don’t have to leave your strappy/vest-style tops and dresses at home. We saw women of all ages wearing normal European summer clothing. That said, it’s best to avoid anything too revealing.

Language Matters

Dig up your French from back in school — it’s more widely spoken than English.

Perfume Museum Experience

We visited the perfume museum and made our own designer perfume. Not cheap (about £60), but we had 1-to-1 instruction and a full explanation from a lovely staff member named Amina. Really enjoyable!

Rooftop Views

There are rooftop terraces everywhere. You’ll be spoiled for choice! We especially liked Mö Mö, right at the edge of Jemaa el-Fna square, with fabulous views over it.

Avoiding Restaurant Hassle

To avoid being hassled by café and restaurant staff trying to drum up business, we learned to say:
“We’ve already eaten”
Or in French: “Nous avons déjà mangé” — whatever the time of day!

Friendly Locals (With a Note of Caution)

Many people were extremely friendly and helpful — taking us to see tiny kittens, helping us find food late at night, and giving directions. However, always check if there’s a charge before accepting help or following someone to a place!

Riad Recommendation

If you’ve not yet booked a Riad, I highly recommend Riad Bleu du Sud.
Beautiful, clean, centrally located, and run by wonderfully attentive staff. Perfect for easy access to the main sights!
